Program: "Operating In RTTY Mode" by Ed Muns, WØYK
Ed was first licensed as WN6AYK in 1962. He primarily chased DX on CW and a bit of SSB until his introduction to contesting as part of the KØRF multi-multi in the early 1970s. Since then, Ed's primary ham radio focus has been CW contesting. In 2003, the NCCC decided to mount an effort to win the first club competition gavel award for the 2004 ARRL RTTY Round-Up. Ed reluctantly agreed to learn RTTY and get into the contest to help the club. Surprisingly, he enjoyed it and won the Pacific Division SOHPAB plaque. Thus began Ed's enjoyment of RTTY contesting and DXing. Since 2005, Ed has been participating in several RTTY and CW contests a year from Aruba using his call P49X.
For this presentation, Ed will start with an introduction to the RTTY mode, signal format, Baudot code, FSK vs. AFSK, etc. He will then discuss how to operate RTTY for DXing and contesting. Finally, Ed will give an overview of the hardware and software used for the RTTY mode including comments about logging software.
Note: Meeting will not be broadcast online via WebEx this month.
